Loving your blogs on Porto. If you had to choose your top 5 restaurants where would you choose please.
We are happy with any budget really. Normally eat at a range of places. Wife doesn’t eat fish unfortunately so often places who are tasting only and not flexible are out.
Thanks Rob! Here are my top 5 (where you can get things other than seafood) so far (not necessarily in rank order):
1. O Forno do Leitão do Zé inside Mercado Bom Sucesso - This is a market stall where you order at the counter and then go find a seat to take your food. They serve suckling pig sandwiches which you can get as a meal with a glass of sparkling wine or beer and a side of chips. Get the one with cheese on it!
2. Casa Agrícola (diagonally across the street from Mercado Bom Sucesso - their seafood rice is very good, but so is the roast beef with fries. Make a reservation for the upstairs restaurant, or sit outside if it's nice.
3. For a high end meal in a beautiful setting, we loved Bistrô Severo. We only had fish, but they had several non-fish dishes that are also highly rated.
4. The best hamburger we have had while travelling outside the US (even better than most we have had in the US) was at Holy Sandwich Shop in the historic district. The ‘Same Old Blues’ burger is an award-winning burger with truffled garlic sauce. The fries are excellent also, and they make a great cocktail. Get there early and be prepared to stand in a short line, there are very few tables inside + bar seating.
5. Our favorite lower budget place was Oficina dos Rissóis. They make baked hand pies with creamy meat filling that are delicious, but the tomato rice was the gold star item here. I dream about this dish.
