We had some company this past week! Shawn’s brother, Troy, and his wife, Kathy, came down to spend a week with us in Puerto Vallarta.
Unfortunately, the weather didn’t exactly roll out the welcome mat. It was ridiculously hot and humid when they arrived, the kind of weather where you start sweating as soon as you step out of the shower. But they were good sports about it, and we managed to get out and enjoy ourselves anyway.
A Little Sightseeing (and Tequila)
One morning, we ventured out for a walk along the Rio Cuale. It’s a beautiful area, with lush tropical greenery and plenty to see along the river.
Of course, the heat eventually caught up with us, so we ducked into a little hole-in-the-wall bar for some much-needed air conditioning and cold drinks. Troy’s back was bothering him, so the tequila at 10 AM was purely medicinal, and we all had to do a shot for moral support.
Back near the mouth of the river is where we spotted Pedro, the local crocodile who calls the Rio Cuale home! We admired him from a very respectable distance.
Around Town
One evening early in their visit, we headed out for dinner and a stroll along the Malecón, where the Día de los Muertos displays were just starting to go up. It’s such a fun time to be in Puerto Vallarta, with all the colorful decorations and preparations for the upcoming celebrations.

The rest of the week was a nice mix of drinks on the beach, stops at some of our favorite local places, and a few really great meals out. Nothing too ambitious, which is exactly how we like it.
After all, we’re not really on vacation anymore. We’re just living somewhere else for a while, and it’s fun to have people come experience a little of that with us.
During drinks on the beach one afternoon, we also got to meet this little cutie, Harris, and his lovely owners from Canada. One of the things we love about spending time here is the people (and dogs!) we meet along the way.
Finally, Some Cooler Evenings!
Thankfully, we even had a couple of evenings when the temperatures dropped enough to make sitting outside enjoyable. After all that heat and humidity, a little ocean breeze felt downright luxurious.
We took full advantage, relaxing on the deck with drinks and watching the pirate ship fireworks over the bay. It’s a view we never seem to get tired of.
Another evening, we gave up the tacos and enjoyed a fancier beachside dinner. Good food, good company, and finally a temperature that didn’t require an immediate change of clothes.
Until Next Time!
The week went by far too quickly, as visits always seem to do. It was wonderful having Troy and Kathy here, enjoying time together without the usual rush of everyday life.
And if any of us ever have sore backs, or really any other ailment, we now know a little bar along the river that offers a very promising treatment plan.
